Comatose: Rangers 3, Angels 1
The junior varsity squad showed up for this one, and with predictable results. Dustin Moseley pitched pretty well, but Darren Oliver took the loss, deservedly, for pushing the tying run across on a balk with men on second and third. Jeez.NL Races
- The Mets suddenly looked all retro last night, i.e. like the Casey Stengel-era incompetents, losing 10-9 to Washington despite a big six-run rally in the ninth. The Braves pounded Philadelphia 10-6, so the Phils stay two back with an elimination number of four.
- That Phillies loss, combined with a 9-7 Rockies win over the Dodgers very nearly resulted in a three-way tie for the Wild Card. The Padres trailed the Giants 4-2 in the ninth inning, and with two out and the go-ahead runs on board, Brian Giles belted his 12th homer of the year, his first since September 11 against Esteban Loaiza and the Dodgers. The three-run blast eventually propelled the Pads to a 6-4 win over San Francisco, putting them in sole possession of the Wild Card, one game up over the Phils and Rockies.
- That win was even more important to the Diamondbacks, who lost 6-5 to the Pirates, snapping the Bucs' nine-game losing skid. The Snakes are only two games up over the Pads in the NL West, with a magic number of four.
- In the NL Central, the Cubs lost 4-2 to the Marlins and Milwaukee pounded on St. Louis 9-1 to bring that race one game closer. The Cubs are two games over the Brewers, with a magic number of four.

Brown v. Board of Education is the much more famous case; eventually it led to the Little Rock Nine and the jackass Orville Faubus riling up the easily stirred. But Westminster, the city across the street from the one in which I grew up, provided a far less stressful example of how to deal with integration, and now the Postal Service is issuing a commemorative stamp for Mendez v. Westminster, one of the rulings that paved the way for Brown.
